Industrial Visit to Power Grid substation

Industrial Visit

Venue: Power Grid substation at Manubolu of range 400/210/132 kv.
Date: 25-01-2017.
Day: Wednesday
Timing: 9:30am to 4:00pm

On 25/01/17 we got permission to visit power grid at Manubolu in Nellore dist., under the guidance of our department. This power grid substation has a voltage range of 400/210/132 kv which has input feeders from the krishnapatnam port and one input feeder from Vijayawada which is Step-downed and supplied to various areas in Nellore district such as Gudur, Manubolu steel plant. We started from college at 9:30am in our college bus and we reached our destination at 11:00am. After reaching the power grid we went to the meet grid authorities. The authorities of the grid were allotted two Professionals people in the grid control and management, and then all the students were divided into two batches (25-students &1-professoional people). Then they explained about all the components and their working.
Some of the components we had seen in the power grid are current transformer, SF6 circuit breakers, Inductive reactors in different ranges, Lightening arrestors, control panels etc. With the help of explanation given by allotted professor we had known about current transformer. The current transformer used in power grid is supplied from two different suppliers on the basis of desired specification of the grid and space. Some of the current transformer have different No of cores 2, 4,6 according to desired specification and secondary coil of the current transformer will have low current range.

SF6 circuit breaker (SULPHUR HEXA FLUORIDE) which is gas with high electro-negativity property which means the property which absorbs high amount of electrons generated during the formation of arc’s to protect the equipment connected to that breaker, during fault conditions. Now a day’s all industries and corporations prefer these SF6 circuit breakers due to its high arc quenching property. Lightening arrestors is the main component present in power grid which protects all the equipment present in grid which is connected to line from high surge currents occurred during lightening and storms. These lightening arrestors discharges that surge currents to the ground. These are connected in series on both ends of the equipment which had to be protected.
Finally with the help of this visit we came to knew about different electrical equipments which are used in power grid for transmission and protection. With the help of explanation given by professionals in the power grid. We are very thankful to our college management and our department for providing such an industrial visit which helps us to enhance our practical knowledge on the industrial sites. We are hoping that our college management and department will conduct some more industrial visits which help to enlarge our practical knowledge.
