A two-week ISTE workshop on ‘Engineering Mechanics’ during 25th Nov. to 5th Dec., 2014 was organized at GIST in association with IIT Bombay sponsored by MHRD under NMEICT.

This workshop was aimed at enhancing the teaching skills of faculty in core Engineering. The workshop benefited faculty teaching Engineering Mechanics or Solid Mechanics or Structural Mechanics at the UG level.

Prof. Mandar M. Inamdar and Prof. Sauvik Banerjee, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay were the resource persons for the workshop and they gave the faculty useful insights into Engineering Mechanics or Solid Mechanics.

The following topics were extensively covered during the 2 week workshop:

Introduction: Fundamentals Concepts and Principles, Review of Vector Mechanics

Equivalent System of Forces: Reduction of System of Forces to One Force and One Couple, Resultant of Distributed Force System

Equilibrium of Rigid bodies: Equilibrium in two and three dimensions, reactions at supports and connections, Equilibrium of a two force body and a three force body.

Analysis of Structures: Equilibrium of Trusses: Method of Joints, Method of Sections Compound Truss, Equilibrium of Frames and Machines

Friction: Laws of Dry Friction, Coefficient of Friction, Angle of Friction, Problems Involving Dry Friction, Belt Friction

Energy Methods: Work of a Force, Principle of Virtual Work, Application of Principle of Virtual Work to Real Structures Potential Energy and Equilibrium, Stability of Equilibrium

Dynamics and Vibrations: Free Vibrations of Mass-Spring Systems, Simple Harmonic Motion, Equation of Motion, Natural Frequency of Vibration, Free Vibration of Rigid bodies Vibration, Free Vibration of Rigid Bodies

About 35 Faculty members from various colleges in the JNTUA region participated at the workshop. Regular tutorials were conducted, Quizzes were organized with the Aakash tablets for every session and a final test was conducted for all the participants. A group assignment was given to the team for solving the problems and uploading to IIT Bombay.
